FAQs

K12-powered online public school is all about informed parents making the best choices for their family. If you’d like to study up, visit our official FAQ page.

Q: Is full-time online school with K12 different from homeschool?

A: Yes. In traditional homeschooling, parents choose the curriculum and hold primary responsibility for instructing their children. K12 provides many options for home-based education, one of which is materials for online homeschooling. Our wide-ranging homeschool curriculum is available for purchase in the Learning Store. Full-time K12-powered online school is different from homeschooling because we offer full-time, teacher-supported education options such as tuition-free public schools that share the same requirements and offer the same benefits as traditional brick-and-mortar public schools.

Q: Who can join a full-time K12-powered online school?

A: There are schools powered by K12 across the country, and the curriculum is for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn more about the options and enrollment requirements available in your area by using the Find A School link above.

Q: Is a K12-powered education a good alternative to homeschooling?

A: K12-powered online schools—both tuition-free public schools and tuition-based private schools — offer comprehensive, time-tested programs and curriculum designed to accommodate a multitude of learning preferences. Whether your child needs extra support or seeks a greater learning challenge, K12-powered schools provide a personalized approach to online education to fit each child’s unique needs. More than 3 million students* have chosen a K12-powered online education as an alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar schools and parent-directed homeschooling.*

Q: Do I need to purchase textbooks and materials when I enroll my child?

A: When you enroll in a full-time K12-powered public school program, the materials to complete each course are shipped directly to your home. Some of these materials, such as textbooks, need to be returned at the end of the year. K12 supplies pre-paid shipping labels as needed for families to return school supplies. Common household supplies, such as printer ink and paper, are not provided. In addition, some of your student’s course materials are delivered digitally within the K12 School (OLS) and are available as soon as they log in.

Q: How much does it cost to attend a K12-powered school?

A: Costs vary depending on which option you choose. Online public schools, available in two-thirds of U.S. states, are tuition-free. There are also a variety of private school options, each with its own fee structure—though several states offer tuition assistance for these schools.
