K12 AI Labs: Module 2, Lesson 4

AI for Brainstorming and Outlining teaches students to use AI as a thinking partner in the writing process—without letting it replace their own voice or judgment. This lesson reframes AI from a shortcut into a genuine creative collaborator, one that can expand thinking rather than narrow it.

Students use tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Notion AI, and Perplexity AI to generate ideas, explore different angles on a topic, and build structured outlines from scratch. They compare AI-generated brainstorms against their own, noting what the AI adds, what it misses, and what they'd never have thought of on their own.

The lesson puts real emphasis on intentionality. Students practice evaluating AI-generated suggestions critically—deciding what fits, what needs revision, and what should be discarded entirely. They learn that accepting an AI outline wholesale is a trap; the goal is to use AI to think bigger, then write better.

Students also explore how different AI tools approach the same brainstorming task, developing a working sense of when to reach for which tool depending on the task at hand.

The lesson closes with students producing an outline for a writing project of their choice—one that reflects their own thinking, sharpened by AI assistance.
