K12 AI Labs: Module 7, Lesson 24

AI Explainer Video challenges students to take something complex—an AI concept, technology, or ethical question—and communicate it clearly, engagingly, and accurately to a general audience through a short video. Using AI production tools like RunwayML or Synthesia, students plan, script, produce, and refine a 60–90 second explainer video that demonstrates both content understanding and communication skill.

Students begin by studying the genre of the explainer video: what makes one work, what makes one fall flat, and how the best examples balance simplicity with accuracy without sacrificing either. They identify structural patterns—hook, context, core explanation, takeaway—and use them as a framework for their own scripts.

From there, students research their chosen topic, draft and refine a script for spoken delivery, and use AI video tools to bring it to life with visuals, narration, and editing. The production process is iterative, with checkpoints for script feedback, visual review, and final polish before the finished product is shared.

The lesson develops skills that span multiple disciplines: clear expository writing, visual storytelling, media literacy, and the ability to make difficult ideas accessible. These are high-value communication skills regardless of what career path students pursue.

Students leave with a finished, shareable explainer video—a strong portfolio piece that demonstrates both AI literacy and communication ability.

ISTE Standards 1, 6, and 7 aligned.
