Ethics, Safety, and Policy - Bias and Integrity in AI

K12 AI Labs: Module 1, Lesson 2

Bias and Integrity in AI deepens students' understanding of how AI systems can reflect, amplify, and perpetuate bias—and what that means in the real world. This lesson goes beyond the surface-level conversation to help students understand where bias in AI actually comes from and why it's so difficult to eliminate.

Students analyze real AI-generated outputs, identifying patterns of bias across text, image, and data examples. They examine real documented cases where AI systems produced skewed or harmful results and discuss the downstream effects on real communities and individuals.

The lesson connects technical concepts to broader questions of fairness and responsibility. Students explore how training data, design choices, and lack of diversity in AI development all contribute to biased outputs—and what it means to use AI tools with integrity in light of that reality.

Students develop a personal framework for evaluating AI outputs critically, asking not just "Is this accurate?" but "Who might this harm?" and "What's missing from this picture?" They leave with practical habits for engaging with AI more thoughtfully and ethically.

ISTE Standards 2 and 3 aligned.
