Ethics, Safety, and Policy - Responsible AI Use
K12 AI Labs: Module 1, Lesson 1
Responsible AI Use gives students a clear-eyed, practical introduction to using AI tools ethically in school and everyday life. Rather than handing students a list of rules, this lesson puts them in the middle of real decisions—analyzing scenarios, debating gray areas, and building their own understanding of what responsible AI use actually looks like.
Students work through a curated set of AI use cases, deciding whether each represents responsible or irresponsible behavior and explaining their reasoning. Discussion moves quickly into nuanced territory: when does AI assistance become academic dishonesty? What counts as "your own work" when AI helped shape it?
The lesson introduces five core principles that anchor the rest of the curriculum: honesty, privacy, accuracy, bias awareness, and academic integrity. Students connect each principle to concrete examples and reflect on their own current AI habits.
The session closes with students collaboratively drafting a Class Responsible AI Use Agreement—a living document that gives them ownership over the norms that will govern AI use in their classroom. Rather than rules handed down from above, students leave with commitments they helped create.
