Public Speaking
Public Speaking introduces students to public speaking as an important skill for academic, professional, and everyday communication.
Students examine different public speaking situations and develop skills as thoughtful and critical listeners of spoken information and persuasion.
The course covers several types of speeches, including informative, persuasive, dramatic, and special occasion. Students read and listen to model speeches, then prepare and deliver their own presentations for a variety of audiences. They learn how to select appropriate topics, adapt messages for specific audiences, research and support ideas, and use feedback to improve.
Students also explore how to effectively use visual and multimedia aids in presentations and how to maintain a credible presence in digital environments.
In addition, students learn about the ethics of public speaking and practice techniques for managing communication anxiety.
